Item #: 9710426133

The essays in this collection survey major landmarks in the Ateneo de Manila University’s 150-year history. But, rather than being a comprehensive history of the Ateneo as an institution, these essays are instead reflections of how the Ateneo’s own history has been closely intertwined with that of the Filipino nation on how it has sought to engage the nation towards the creation of a more just and equitable society in keeping with the goals of the Ateneo as a Jesuit, Catholic, and Filipino institution of learning.

The book opens with the return of the Spanish Jesuits to the Philippines after an absence of almost a hundred years. No sooner had this group of sixteen priests and brothers arrived than they were prevailed upon to open a school in Manila. By the last years if the 19th century, the Ateneo was offering an AB degree and many an illustrious Filipino, such as national hero Jose Rizal, graduated from the Ateneo and several of the school’s alumni were involved in the revolution against Spain.

Subsequent chapters relate the Ateneo de Manila’s efforts to respond to the challenges confronting Philippine society at different stages of its history. Such efforts include the reorientation of the Ateneo’s educational system as the American Jesuits took over the administration of the school on the 1920s, Fr. Joseph A. Mulry’s involvement of students and alumni in social action work in the 1930s, the call to defend the nation against invading Japanese forces in the 1940s, Fr. Walter Hogan and the Institute of Social Order’s work with laborers and farmers in the 1950s, the student activism of the 1960s and 1970s, and the challenge to confront the Marcos dictatorship through social and political involvement in the 1980s. The book closes with a survey of the Ateneo de Manila University’s current efforts towards capability-building in the areas of basic education, public health, housing, and local governance.
