Teaching chemistry requires a different set of skills from those needed by chemists doing research or laboratory work. Most chemistry instructors were trained to become chemists, not educators. They have very little knowledge of learning styles and how students learn from them. Thus, chemistry instructors often find themselves “feeling their way” as they go through teaching. Teaching can only be considered effective if students are learning, that is, if students are able to process new information by comprehending, analyzing, synthesizing, and evaluating them, then integrating these bits of knowledge into a meaningful whole. Learning occurs only when students can securely anchor the new principles or concepts into their existing knowledge structure.

This manual, a companion to the book Foundation Course in College Chemistry, provides basic teaching guidelines for the chemistry teacher: covering goals, teaching strategies, concept mapping, and assessments. It also lists the main science concepts in each chapter as well as the answers to the self-assessment questions contained in the book.
